Set in a public park in Mexico City at 7,342 feet above sea level. The thin air challenges engines and brakes while the legendary stadium section Foro Sol seats 30,000 screaming fans for an unmatched atmosphere.
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a permanent racing circuit, located in Mexico City. Drivers cover 4.304 km (2.674 miles) and 17 corners each lap, run clockwise. Among its named corners are Peraltada and Foro Sol stadium section.
The circuit opened in 1959 and holds FIA Grade 1 licensing. It appears on the Formula 1 and Formula E calendars. Around 110,000 spectators can attend.
The track exists because of a family. In 1958 Pedro Rodríguez senior proposed building a circuit on the existing road network inside the Magdalena Mixhuca sports complex, so that his sons and other Mexican drivers could race at home in front of an international field. Construction began in 1959 and finished the same year, and Pedro Rodríguez won the opening event, the Mexico City 500 Miles, on 20 December with his brother Ricardo third.
Ricardo was killed three years later, in practice for the 1962 Mexican Grand Prix, when the suspension failed on his Lotus at the Peraltada — the long, steeply banked final corner. He was twenty. The circuit was renamed for the brothers shortly afterwards. Modern layouts route through the baseball stadium rather than taking the Peraltada flat, but the corner is still there.
