Overtaking is notoriously hard, so qualifying position and strategy carry more weight here than at most venues, and races are frequently decided in the pit lane. The circuit sits in a natural amphitheatre, so sightlines from the banking are unusually good.
It falls in high summer and is reliably hot, with little shade — bring water and sun cover. Getting there from Budapest is straightforward and cheap: metro M2 to Örs vezér tere, the H8 suburban train to Kerepes, then a free shuttle for ticket holders, taking a little over an hour in total. Budapest itself is the reason many people extend the trip.
The circuit was built to bring Formula 1 behind the Iron Curtain, on a site outside the village of Mogyoród about 20 km north-east of Budapest. It went up on what had been farmland in eight months — less construction time than any other circuit in the championship's history.
The first Hungarian Grand Prix ran on 10 August 1986 and was won by Nelson Piquet for Williams ahead of Ayrton Senna, with Nigel Mansell third. It drew around 200,000 spectators from across the Eastern Bloc, a Formula 1 attendance record that stood for nearly a decade. The race has been held every year since, making it one of the longest continuously running events on the calendar.
