Construction began in 2019 on a 4.31 km, seventeen-turn circuit on the south coast of Lombok, part of an Indonesian government project to develop the Mandalika region for tourism. The surface was finished by April 2021 but the surrounding infrastructure was not, and the pandemic pushed the MotoGP debut back; World Superbikes came first, closing its 2021 season there, with MotoGP following in March 2022.
The asphalt has been the recurring problem. During testing in February 2022 the surface broke up so badly it was throwing stones at riders, and a partial resurfacing was rushed through between turns 17 and 5 — using a mix named Rinjani after the island's volcano — finished barely a week before the race and without a full curing period. The circuit has been resurfaced repeatedly since.
