Owned by Ferrari and set in the rolling Tuscan hills, Mugello is a rider's paradise. The flowing 3.26-mile circuit with sweeping elevation changes hosts the Italian MotoGP and is considered one of the finest tracks in the world.
Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello is a permanent racing circuit, located in Scarperia, Tuscany. Drivers cover 5.245 km (3.259 miles) and 15 corners each lap, run clockwise. Among its named corners are Casanova-Savelli, Arrabbiata 1 & 2 and Correntaio.
The circuit opened in 1974 and holds FIA Grade 1 licensing. It appears on the MotoGP and GT calendars. Around 50,000 spectators can attend.
Racing in the Mugello valley began in 1914 on a 66 km loop of public roads that ran uphill from Scarperia to Firenzuola and back over the Futa Pass. The First World War interrupted it almost immediately, but the road race returned afterwards and had its best years in the 1920s and 1930s on that long, dusty circuit.
Safety eventually made the public roads impossible, and a permanent circuit was built nearby, opening in June 1974 with a round of the F5000 series. Ferrari bought it in 1988, which is the fact that shapes everything since: the team has a world-class track at its exclusive disposal for testing in private, and the circuit has become the centre of Italian motorcycle racing, holding the Italian motorcycle Grand Prix for decades.
