The home of British motorsport and birthplace of Formula 1. This legendary 3.66-mile circuit hosted the first-ever World Championship Grand Prix in 1950 and remains one of the fastest and most demanding tracks on the calendar.
Silverstone is fast, open and exposed, a legacy of its airfield origins — there are few natural features to break the wind, and weather moves across the site quickly. The circuit's signature is the Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel complex, a rapid change of direction that is among the most demanding sequences in motorsport and genuinely spectacular to watch in modern machinery. Copse is one of the quickest corners on the calendar, and Stowe rewards bravery on the brakes.
As a spectator venue it is well served: the infield is flat and walkable, sightlines are long, and the grandstands around Becketts and Stowe give a real sense of the speeds involved. Crowds are large and traffic on race day is heavy in every direction, so the shuttle buses from Milton Keynes and Northampton are usually less painful than driving. Camping on site is a substantial part of the weekend's culture.
The circuit occupies the site of RAF Silverstone, a wartime bomber station that opened in 1943 and closed to the air force in 1946. Racing began almost improvised: on 2 October 1948 the Royal Automobile Club staged a British Grand Prix on the runways themselves, the course marked out with hay bales, rope and canvas, and around 100,000 people came to watch Luigi Villoresi win in a Maserati.
For the 1949 International Trophy the organisers moved to the airfield's perimeter track, and that arrangement carried into the following seasons. When the Formula One World Championship was created in 1950, Silverstone hosted its very first round, won by Giuseppe Farina for Alfa Romeo — the reason the circuit is routinely described as the birthplace of the championship. The layout has been reprofiled many times since, most substantially with the Arena section and a new pit complex.
