The egg-shaped oval known as "Too Tough to Tame", where brushing the outside wall is so routine it has its own name.
Darlington is asymmetric — its two ends have different radii, a consequence of the land it was built on in 1950 — so a car cannot be set up to suit both. Drivers run right up against the outer wall through the corners, and the resulting scrape down the right side is known locally as the Darlington Stripe, worn more as evidence than as embarrassment.
It is the oldest superspeedway in NASCAR and still regarded as the hardest of the intermediate tracks to drive well.
