Martinsville Speedway

Ridgeway, Virginia · US

The oldest track on the NASCAR calendar and the shortest — a flat paperclip of two long straights joined by tight, heavily braked turns.

About Martinsville Speedway

Martinsville has been part of NASCAR since the series began, and its shape has barely changed: two straights connected by near-flat, very tight corners. There is no banking to help, so drivers brake hard, turn, and get back to power in a rhythm closer to short-track racing than to the superspeedways.

Brakes and patience decide it. Tempers are part of the format, and the winner receives a grandfather clock rather than a trophy.
