Martinsville has been part of NASCAR since the series began, and its shape has barely changed: two straights connected by near-flat, very tight corners. There is no banking to help, so drivers brake hard, turn, and get back to power in a rhythm closer to short-track racing than to the superspeedways.
Brakes and patience decide it. Tempers are part of the format, and the winner receives a grandfather clock rather than a trophy.
