Fuji Speedway is a permanent racing circuit in Oyama, Shizuoka. The lap measures 4.563 km (2.835 miles) across 16 corners, run clockwise.
It opened in 1966 and holds FIA Grade 1 licensing. Series racing here include WEC and GT. Capacity is around 110,000 spectators.
The company that built it was originally called Japan NASCAR Corporation, founded in 1963 to bring American-style oval racing to Japan. The plan was a 4 km high-banked superspeedway, but the money ran out and only one banked turn was ever built. Mitsubishi Estate took over in October 1965, converted the design into a road course, and opened it that December with the surviving banking still in the lap.
That corner proved lethal. It was eventually abandoned after a fiery accident in 1974 killed drivers Hiroshi Kazato and Seiichi Suzuki, and the derelict banking sat unused for decades until a 2005 refurbishment turned part of it into a memorial. Toyota took ownership in 2000 and rebuilt the circuit, and the current lap is defined by a main straight approaching 1.5 km — one of the longest in the sport — with Mount Fuji directly behind the grandstands.
