The only figure-eight circuit in F1, owned by Honda. Suzuka's demanding 3.6-mile layout with the legendary 130R corner and Spoon Curve has been the scene of some of the sport's most dramatic championship deciders.
Suzuka is the only figure-eight circuit in Formula 1, its back section crossing under the front via an overpass, and it is widely regarded as the most complete test of a driver on the calendar. The opening Esses are a flowing sequence where rhythm matters more than outright braking; the Degner curves punish any excess; Spoon is a long double-apex left that dictates speed down the back straight; and 130R, named for its radius, is a very fast left that separates the committed from the cautious.
The circuit sits within a larger leisure complex with a funfair and hotel, which gives race weekends an unusually family-oriented feel. Japanese crowds are famously knowledgeable and well-behaved, and the grandstands at the Esses and the hairpin give excellent value. Access is via Shiroko station and a shuttle bus, and the queues for that bus after a Grand Prix are long enough to plan around.
The circuit was commissioned by Soichiro Honda in the early 1960s as a proving ground for the company's cars and motorcycles rather than as an international racing venue. It was designed in 1962 by the Dutch architect John Hugenholtz, who also shaped Zandvoort, and his solution to the site's terrain produced the crossover that defines the place — a layout that minimised earthmoving and, almost incidentally, created the only figure-eight in top-line motorsport.
The complex grew over the following decades, gaining an amusement park beside the start-finish straight and later a hotel and spa. Originally branded Honda Land, it was renamed once Formula 1 began visiting, and the circuit has since become the venue most associated with championship deciders — a consequence of both its late-season slot and a layout that punishes error.
