F1's original night race, lighting up the Singapore skyline since 2008. The 3.15-mile street circuit around Marina Bay is one of the most physically demanding on the calendar, with drivers racing past iconic landmarks under floodlights.
Set in Singapore, Marina Bay, Marina Bay Street Circuit is a temporary street circuit. A lap covers 4.927 km (3.062 miles) and 19 corners, run anti-clockwise.
The circuit opened in 2008 and holds FIA Grade 1 licensing. Formula 1 races here. It holds roughly 90,000 spectators.
Singapore signed with Bernie Ecclestone in March 2007 for a five-year deal starting the following year, and set about something no Grand Prix had attempted: a race run entirely after dark. The circuit was laid through the streets around Marina Bay, with a 350-metre pit building constructed off Raffles Boulevard, and roughly 1,600 floodlights installed to light the lap to a standard that would satisfy television and the drivers.
The first race ran from 26 to 28 September 2008 and Fernando Alonso won it. The result later became notorious: his Renault team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr. had crashed deliberately to bring out the safety car at the moment that suited Alonso's strategy, a scandal that came out a year later and cost senior figures their careers. The night race itself was judged a success and has been copied since.
