A floodlit circuit in the Qatari desert that has hosted MotoGP night races since 2004. Losail joined the F1 calendar in 2021, offering a unique racing experience under powerful artificial lighting.
Losail International Circuit is a permanent racing circuit, located in Lusail. Drivers cover 5.419 km (3.367 miles) and 16 corners each lap, run clockwise.
The circuit opened in 2004 and holds FIA Grade 1 licensing. It appears on the Formula 1 and MotoGP calendars. Around 52,000 spectators can attend.
The circuit was built north of Doha in just under a year by around a thousand workers, at a cost of some $58 million, and opened in 2004 with the first Qatar motorcycle Grand Prix, won by Sete Gibernau. It sits in open desert, and the sand blowing across the track has always been a factor — the surrounds are watered and sprayed to hold it down.
Permanent floodlighting was installed in 2007, at the time the largest such installation at any sports venue in the world. It allowed the 2008 Qatar Grand Prix to become the first MotoGP race run at night, and night racing has been the circuit's signature since. Formula 1 arrived much later, first in 2021 and then on a long-term deal, racing under the same lights.
